Artist's Description
San Diego County : Anza Borrego Desert State Park
Though probably not considered a superbloom, Anza Borrego's landscape brought forth an abundance of wildflowers in 2023. Blooms appeared as early as November following an active monsoon season and autumn rains, erupting in parched valleys with vibrant displays of color through winter and spring.
Aching for a glimpse I got up well before dawn to visit Henderson Canyon Road just outside of Borrego Springs. Walking through dry flood basins, their congealed mud cracking beneath my feet like brittle tiles, I soon found a gathering of low sprawling Desert Sand Verbena. As I set up my camera mist drizzled from clouds overhead -- it absorbed morning light to brush the entire valley with a soft purple glow.
About William Dunigan
My first taste of photography was (seemingly ages ago) while taking an intro to photography course. There we learned the basics of shooting, darkroom development, and print with film. In following years I carried my Cannon AE-1 all over the world taking pictures for fun and memories. Upon an introduction to DSLRs, my devotion to photography exploded given the new possibilities I found for manipulating and personalizing images. What feeds this passion is the emotive capacity of art – its ability to evoke strong reactions from viewers. I could spend hours sifting through and losing myself in the work of Eugene Atget or Michael Kenna. Thank you Jackie! I was very close to those little flowers which required multiple shots with different focus points to get everything sharp. I then stacked them in photoshop and blended using layer masks.
