Description
San Diego County : Anza Borrego Desert State Park
Though probably not considered a superbloom, Anza Borrego's landscape brought forth an abundance of wildflowers in 2023. Blooms appeared as early as November following an active monsoon season and autumn rains, erupting in parched valleys with vibrant displays of color through winter and spring.
Aching for a glimpse I got up well before dawn to visit Henderson Canyon Road just outside of Borrego Springs. Walking through dry flood basins I soon found a gathering of low sprawling Desert Sand Verbena. I got nice and low, my belly on the ground, to capture this one.

Beautiful, what time of the year was this taken?
William Dunigan replied:
Was a December bloom which I gather is somewhat rare. Had some good monsoons this summer and fall rains which brought them out early. Usually a spring thing I think.

I love how you made the closest approach to the wonderful tiny flowers with mountain on background!

I do love verbena flowers . . . had no idea they bloom in the desert! Such a scene of contrasts here! You are indeed a lucky person to get to experience these places in real life, and I am so grateful you share them with all of us here! . . . f/l
William Dunigan replied:
Thanks Karen! They do indeed bloom in the desert for a short time it gets enough rain. They are very beautiful with a nice scent as well!
